You Should Not Have to Wait for Life to Slow Down

Work schedules, kids, school and rent do not pause because someone needs help with substance use.

So people wait. They tell themselves it is not bad enough yet, or that they will deal with it once things settle down. Things rarely settle down on their own.

The choice usually gets presented as leaving home for weeks of residential treatment or seeing a counselor once a week. For a lot of people, neither one works.

IOP is the option in between. Enough structure and accountability to change something, scheduled so the rest of your life keeps running while you do it.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An Intensive Outpatient Program, usually called IOP, is structured addiction and mental health treatment delivered without an overnight stay.

In New Jersey, adult IOP involves at least nine treatment hours per week. Standard outpatient care falls below that. At Renova Recovery, clients attend three to five days per week for approximately three hours per session, based on the individualized treatment plan.

IOP sits between two other levels of care:

Some clients start at the IOP level. Others move into IOP after detox, residential treatment or Partial Care, as they become ready for more independence.

Placement is based on clinical need, safety, stability, home environment, treatment history and how much structure your recovery currently requires. Every client begins with a comprehensive clinical assessment.

Who May Benefit From IOP?

IOP may be appropriate for adults who can live safely at home or in a supportive recovery environment, but who need more than an occasional counseling appointment.

01

Working Adults

People who need real treatment while staying employed. Morning, afternoon and evening options may make it easier to coordinate treatment with different work schedules.

02

Stepping Down From PHP or Residential Care

Clients finishing Partial Care, residential treatment or detox who are ready for more independence but not ready for the structure to disappear entirely.

03

Parents and Caregivers

Adults responsible for children or family members who need a schedule that lets them stay present at home.

04

Students and Young Adults

People balancing recovery with school, training or the early stages of a career, with treatment that allows many clients to stay connected to what they have already started.

05

When Weekly Counseling Is Not Enough

Adults still dealing with cravings, close calls or repeated setbacks despite lower-frequency outpatient support. IOP adds frequency and accountability without requiring a higher level of care.

06

People managing anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, grief or mood instability alongside substance use, who need both addressed in one coordinated plan.

Every admission begins with a clinical evaluation. IOP is not right for everyone, and we will recommend a different level of care when greater medical, psychiatric or residential support is needed.

Not Sure Whether IOP Is the Right Level of Care?

You do not have to figure this out on your own before calling.

Renova Recovery's admissions team can help determine whether you or someone you love may need:

  • Medical detoxification
  • Residential or inpatient treatment
  • Partial Care, commonly called PHP
  • Intensive Outpatient treatment
  • Standard Outpatient counseling
  • Supportive recovery housing

Renova Recovery does not provide medical detoxification or residential treatment. When detoxification or residential care is needed, our team can coordinate a referral to an appropriate provider.

If IOP is not the right place to start, we will explain why and help you identify the next step.

Why Choose Renova Recovery for IOP?

Morning, Afternoon and Evening Options

All three are available Monday through Friday. Different people work different hours, and treatment that only exists at ten in the morning is not available to someone on days. If your schedule changes mid-treatment, tell your counselor. We would rather find you a different group than lose you. Scheduling depends on clinical appropriateness and current availability.

Individual and Group Therapy

Every IOP client at Renova Recovery works one-on-one with a counselor in addition to participating in group therapy. Each serves a different purpose in the treatment plan, and some programs offer group only, so it is worth asking wherever you are looking.

Joint Commission Accredited

Renova Recovery has earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval, which reflects an independent review of our quality, safety, leadership and clinical care practices against national standards.

A Smaller, Supportive Setting

Renova is intentionally a small local program. Groups stay small enough that people actually participate, and your clinician knows you by name and history rather than by file number.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Coordination

When medication may support your recovery or mental health stability, we coordinate with a prescribing provider so your clinical care and medical care stay connected. Medication options, eligibility and monitoring are determined by the prescriber.

Case Management for the Practical Obstacles

Treatment rarely ends because the therapy stopped working. It ends because housing fell through, transportation failed or someone could not find work. Our case management team helps with sober living placement, job searching, transportation, community resources and continued-care planning while you are still enrolled.

Local Care in Ocean County

Renova Recovery is an independent outpatient program in Brick Township. Clients receive structured treatment while staying close to home, family and the support they already have.

What Treatment Includes

Every treatment plan is individualized. Addiction therapy services may include the following, based on clinical needs and treatment goals.

Group Therapy

The core of IOP. Structured groups where clients build recovery skills, develop accountability, give and receive feedback, and connect with people facing the same things. For a lot of clients this is the first room where they have not had to explain themselves.

Individual Counseling

One-on-one sessions covering personal history, triggers, relationships and the things that do not belong in a group setting.

Relapse-Prevention Planning

Identifying your specific warning signs, high-risk situations and practical responses for cravings and stress. Each client develops a written plan.

Co-Occurring Mental Health Support

For many people the substance use started as a way to manage something else, and treating one without the other leaves the original problem in place. Treatment may address anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, grief and mood instability alongside recovery, within the program's clinical scope. When needs extend beyond what we provide, we coordinate outside psychiatric or specialty care rather than leaving you to arrange it.

Recovery Education and Skill Building

Practical sessions on addiction, emotional regulation, communication, relationships, sleep, stress and building routines that hold up outside the program.

Medication Support

When clinically appropriate, MAT or other medication support is coordinated with a prescribing provider and built into your plan alongside counseling.

Case Management and Continued-Care Planning

Support with sober living placement, job searching, transportation, community resources, medical-provider coordination and planning for what comes after IOP. Planning starts well before treatment ends, so you finish with somewhere to go.

Family Support When Appropriate

With your authorization, family participation can improve communication, establish healthier boundaries and strengthen the support waiting outside the program.

Treatment Approaches

Depending on your individualized treatment plan, our clinicians may use:

Schedule and Structure

Our Intensive Outpatient Program is designed to accommodate individuals balancing treatment with professional, academic, and family responsibilities. Programming is typically offered three to five days per week, with sessions lasting approximately three hours per day.

Typical Weekly Schedule

  • Three to five treatment days per week
  • Approximately three hours per session
  • Morning, afternoon and evening options available Monday through Friday
  • Individual counseling alongside group programming
  • Length of treatment based on clinical progress, goals and authorization

A Treatment Day May Include

  • Clinical check-in
  • Group therapy
  • Recovery education and skill development
  • Relapse-prevention work
  • Individual counseling as scheduled
  • Treatment plan and progress review

Schedules change. If work, school, transportation or family circumstances create a conflict, talk to your counselor. We will look at available options while keeping the schedule clinically appropriate.

Alumni and Continued Care

Completing IOP is a milestone, and the period right after formal treatment ends is when consistent connection matters most.

Clients who complete treatment at Renova Recovery are invited to stay connected through our Alumni Program at no cost, including follow-up calls from our team, email check-ins after discharge, and connection to community recovery resources and peer support.

Formal treatment ending does not mean support has to end.

IOP vs. Partial Care (PHP) vs. Standard Outpatient

The difference between these levels is intensity, weekly hours and how much structure you get.

Feature Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Partial Care / PHP Standard Outpatient
Typical schedule About 3 hours per day, 3 to 5 days per week About 5 to 6 hours per day, 5 days per week Fewer than 9 treatment hours per week
Session times Morning, afternoon and evening available Daytime Varies by appointment
Intensity Structured treatment with greater daily independence Renova's most intensive outpatient level Lower-frequency ongoing support
May be appropriate for Working adults, caregivers, students and clients stepping down from higher care Early recovery, transition from detox or residential care, greater support needs Continued recovery support or lower treatment needs
Work compatibility Often coordinates with employment Usually requires significant schedule adjustment Generally the most flexible

Clients move between levels as their stability and needs change, based on clinical progress rather than a fixed timeline. Clients stepping down from PHP continue with the same clinicians they have been working with, in the same building, without a new intake process. FAQ

  • How long does IOP last?

There is no single answer. Length depends on clinical progress, treatment goals, attendance, level of care needs and insurance authorization. Your plan is reviewed throughout rather than fixed at intake.

  • Do you help with sober living or finding work?

Yes. Case management includes sober living placement and job searching, along with transportation, community resources and continued-care planning. These are the practical barriers that end treatment for people, and we work on them while you are still enrolled.

  • Can I keep working while attending IOP?

Many clients do. Morning, afternoon and evening groups are available Monday through Friday, so treatment can usually be coordinated with a work schedule. Whether a specific schedule works depends on your treatment needs, your hours and current group availability.

  • Do I get individual therapy, or is it only group?

Both. Every IOP client at Renova Recovery works one-on-one with a counselor in addition to group programming. Each serves a different purpose in your treatment plan. Some programs offer group only, so it is worth asking wherever you are looking.

  • What is the difference between IOP and PHP?

IOP is approximately three hours per day, three to five days per week. Partial Care, commonly called PHP, is approximately five to six hours per day, five days per week. PHP provides more structure and is often where people start after detox or residential treatment. Many clients step down from PHP into IOP.

  • Is Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) available?

When medication is clinically appropriate, we coordinate care with a prescribing medical provider. Options and eligibility are determined individually by the prescriber.

  • Does insurance cover IOP?

Many commercial plans include behavioral health benefits, though coverage varies by policy and network status. Our admissions team can verify your benefits before treatment begins. Call (908) 533-9808.

  • Does IOP address mental health concerns?

Yes, within the program's clinical scope. We address co-occurring concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, grief and mood instability alongside substance use. When additional psychiatric or specialty care is needed, we coordinate the referral.

  • What happens after IOP?

Most clients step down to standard outpatient counseling as they stabilize, with continued care planning built around what support they still need. Everyone who completes treatment stays connected through our Alumni Program, which includes follow-up calls, email check-ins and connection to community recovery resources.

  • How many days per week is IOP?

Three to five days per week, approximately three hours per session, based on your individualized treatment plan. New Jersey defines adult IOP as at least nine treatment hours weekly.

  • Will Renova Recovery tell my employer I am in treatment?

We do not contact an employer about your treatment without your written authorization, except where disclosure is otherwise permitted or required by law. If you need documentation for a leave request or FMLA, talk to your counselor about what can be provided and authorize the disclosure.

  • Do you offer evening IOP?

Yes. Evening groups are available alongside morning and afternoon options. Call admissions to discuss current availability.

  • Do I need to complete detox or rehab first?

No. Some clients enter IOP directly, others transition from detox, residential treatment or Partial Care. The clinical assessment determines the appropriate starting point.

  • Where are you located?

35 Beaverson Blvd, Building 6A, Brick Township, NJ 08723. We serve Brick, Toms River, Lakewood, Point Pleasant, Barnegat, Manahawkin, and communities throughout Ocean County and the Jersey Shore.

Have a question we did not cover? Call +19085339808. A real person answers, and there is no pressure or obligation.

You Do Not Have to Put Your Life on Hold

A common reason people delay treatment is that they cannot afford to stop everything. That is a real concern, and it is one reason Renova Recovery offers morning, afternoon and evening IOP options.

Call to discuss what a treatment schedule may look like, what benefits may be available under your policy and whether IOP is the appropriate level of care. If another program is more appropriate, our team will explain the recommendation and help identify the next step.

Same-day assessments are often available.
