What Is Kratom?
Kratom comes from a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. Traditionally, its leaves were chewed or brewed into tea for energy or pain relief. Today it's sold as powders, capsules, and extracts in smoke shops, vape stores, and online, and it's currently legal in New Jersey, with no state restrictions as of 2026, though legislation that could change that is actively moving through the state legislature.
Kratom's active compounds, including mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), interact with the same opioid receptors in the brain that opioids do. At lower doses it tends to feel stimulating; at higher doses it produces more sedating, opioid-like effects. Concentrated 7-OH products, sometimes sold as "Hydroxy Kratom" in tablets, gummies, shots, and dissolvable strips, contain much higher levels of that compound than natural leaf. The FDA describes 7-OH as a potent mu-opioid receptor agonist with opioid-like risks, and these concentrated products are considerably more potent than natural kratom leaf, comparable to morphine or fentanyl according to addiction physicians. The DEA temporarily scheduled 7-OH as a controlled substance in July 2026, reflecting how quickly concern about it has grown.
Kratom vs. Concentrated 7-OH Products
Kratom and concentrated 7-OH products are related, but they're not the same thing, and that distinction matters for treatment. Natural kratom leaf contains several compounds, including mitragynine and only small, naturally occurring amounts of 7-OH. Concentrated or semi-synthetic 7-OH products, increasingly sold online and in convenience stores, smoke shops, and gas stations, can contain far higher concentrations, which is exactly why the DEA singled them out for scheduling rather than kratom leaf itself.
Treatment takes into account exactly what someone has been using, natural leaf, an extract, or a concentrated 7-OH product, how often, how much, and whether other substances are involved, since the risk profile and withdrawal experience can differ significantly between them.
When Kratom Use Becomes a Problem
Because kratom is legal and often marketed as a natural supplement, dependence can develop without anyone recognizing it as a substance use problem until it's well underway. It's often used at first for pain, energy, mood, or to manage opioid withdrawal symptoms without a doctor's involvement, and can gradually turn into daily reliance.
It may be time to consider treatment if kratom is being used more often or in larger amounts than intended, if cutting down feels impossible even when it's wanted, or if use continues despite real problems at home, work, or school. Needing more to feel the same effect, using kratom or 7-OH products to avoid withdrawal symptoms, and combining them with other substances are also strong signs that professional support is needed.

Kratom Withdrawal and Detox
Because kratom acts on opioid receptors, withdrawal can resemble opioid withdrawal, including anxiety, muscle aches, insomnia, nausea, sweating, and restlessness. Symptoms tend to be more intense with heavier, longer-term use and with concentrated 7-OH products specifically.
Renova Recovery does not provide on-site detox, inpatient care, or residential treatment. A higher level of care may be needed first if someone is experiencing significant withdrawal, cannot stop using without medical support, has been using concentrated 7-OH products heavily, or is combining kratom with other high-risk substances. When that's the case, our admissions team helps identify an appropriate detox or residential provider, and Renova can serve as the next step once someone is medically stable.

Multiple treatment sessions each week, with morning, afternoon, and evening options, while clients stay connected to work, school, and family. Built for people who need consistent structure without full treatment days.
Outpatient Care
(OP)
A lighter weekly schedule, often used as a step down from Partial Care or IOP, or as ongoing support for long-term recovery.
Medication and Kratom Treatment
Because kratom acts on opioid receptors, some treatment approaches use buprenorphine to manage kratom withdrawal, similar to opioid dependence treatment. Renova Recovery does not prescribe buprenorphine, Suboxone, or methadone, and does not operate a methadone clinic. Our on-site physician is available weekly and can evaluate whether naltrexone (Vivitrol), a non-opioid medication, is appropriate as part of a client's care.
