It is the highest level of outpatient addiction treatment we provide, and it sits between residential rehab and an Intensive Outpatient Program.

PHP in New Jersey, in 30 Seconds
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) in New Jersey is a daytime addiction treatment program that runs six hours a day, five days a week, while the client lives at home. New Jersey licenses this level of care as Partial Care. Insurance carriers, discharge planners and referring clinicians call it PHP. - Who it fits: Adults who are medically stable and no longer need withdrawal management, but need daily clinical structure. Often people stepping down from detox or residential rehab, or people for whom weekly outpatient counseling has not held.
- Schedule: Six hours a day in two group blocks, 9 am to 12 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm, five days a week, Monday through Friday. Length of stay is based on clinical progress and authorization, not a fixed number of weeks.
- What it treats: Alcoholism, opioid, benzodiazepine, cocaine, methamphetamine and other substance use disorders, alongside co-occurring anxiety, depression, trauma and mood conditions.
- Living situation: Clients live at home or in a sober living residence. Renova does not provide housing and can coordinate sober living referrals in Ocean County.
- Therapy: Individual counseling is built into every treatment plan alongside daily group therapy, using CBT, DBT skills, motivational interviewing and trauma-informed approaches.
- Medication: Medication-Assisted Treatment, including Vivitrol administered on site, is coordinated with a prescribing provider when clinically appropriate.
- Work: PHP is a full treatment day, so most clients adjust their work schedule. Our IOP runs three hours a day, three to five days a week, with a choice of 9 am to 12 pm, 2 pm to 5 pm or 5 pm to 8 pm for adults who cannot.
- Cost and insurance: Joint Commission accredited. We work with most commercial PPO plans, primarily out of network, and verify benefits before admission.

What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?
A Partial Hospitalization Program is the most intensive form of outpatient addiction treatment. It provides significantly more structure than weekly counseling or an Intensive Outpatient Program, without requiring anyone to live at a facility. PHP is often the right fit for people in early recovery, people stepping down from a higher level of care, and people at elevated risk of relapse who need therapeutic contact every weekday.
What Does PHP Stand For?
PHP stands for Partial Hospitalization Program. The name is misleading, because nobody is hospitalized. You are not admitted, you do not stay overnight, and there is no medical bed involved. "Partial hospitalization" describes the intensity of the clinical programming, roughly comparable to what a hospital day program would provide, delivered on an outpatient basis so you go home at the end of the day.
How Many Hours a Day Is PHP?
At Renova Recovery, PHP runs six hours a day, five days a week, in two group blocks: 9 am to 12 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm. That is 30 hours a week. The American Society of Addiction Medicine sets 20 hours a week as the threshold for this level of care, so our program runs half again above the standard. IOP, by comparison, runs about three hours a day.
How Long Does PHP Last?
Length of stay depends on clinical progress, treatment goals and insurance authorization rather than a fixed program length. Your plan is reviewed regularly throughout treatment. Most clients step down into
IOP rather than ending treatment outright when PHP is finished.
NEW JERSEY LICENSURE
Partial Care Programs in NJ: The Same Level of Care
New Jersey does not license this level of care as "partial hospitalization." The state licenses it as Partial Care. If you are searching for partial care programs in NJ, adult partial care, or a partial care program near you, that is the same level of treatment described on this page.
The two names exist because they come from different systems. Partial Care is the New Jersey licensing category, written into state regulation and used by the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Partial Hospitalization Program, or PHP, is the term used by insurance carriers, hospital discharge planners, ASAM criteria and treatment providers nationally. Renova Recovery is licensed in New Jersey to provide Partial Care, and we describe it as PHP because that is what your insurance card, your referring clinician and your discharge paperwork will call it.
Practically, the distinction matters in one place: paperwork. When a benefits representative asks what level of care you are entering, PHP and Partial Care get you to the same answer. Our admissions team handles that language for you.
Adult Partial Care at Renova Recovery
Renova Recovery's partial care program serves adults 18 and older with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. We do not provide adolescent or child partial care. Our program is built around small groups, individual counseling and Medication-Assisted Treatment coordination, five days a week, at our Brick Township facility.

WHAT WE TREAT
PHP Rehab for Drug and Alcohol Addiction
PHP rehab treats the substance use itself and everything wrapped around it. At Renova Recovery, the same partial hospitalization schedule serves people whose primary problem is alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methamphetamine or a combination, because the clinical work of early recovery is largely the same regardless of the substance. What changes is the medical coordination, the relapse triggers and the medications involved.
PHP Alcohol Rehab
Alcoholism is the most common reason adults enter our program, particularly among longer-term Ocean County residents.
PHP alcohol rehab at Renova Recovery combines daily group therapy, individual counseling and relapse-prevention work with
Vivitrol when it is clinically appropriate, administered on site at our Brick facility rather than referred out. Clients who need medically supervised withdrawal management first are placed with an affiliated detox provider and transition into PHP afterward.
PHP Drug Rehab
PHP drug rehab covers opioids, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, prescription stimulants and polysubstance use.
Treatment planning accounts for the specific substance, because cravings, cognitive recovery timelines and relapse patterns differ.
Our methamphetamine track is Matrix Model informed. Opioid clients are coordinated with a prescribing provider for Medication-Assisted Treatment where indicated.
PHP After Detox
Detox handles withdrawal. It does not treat addiction.
The weeks immediately after detox are when relapse risk is highest, and PHP exists to hold that window.
Clients coming out of a detox or residential program can move directly into our partial hospitalization program, usually within a day or two of discharge, so the structure does not disappear at the exact moment it is most needed.
PHP With Medication-Assisted Treatment
When medication is clinically appropriate, Medication-Assisted Treatment is coordinated with a prescribing medical provider and runs alongside therapy rather than instead of it. Vivitrol injections are administered on site at our Brick Township facility.
Options, eligibility and dosing are determined individually by the prescriber.

PHP for Dual Diagnosis and Mental Health
Substance use and mental health conditions usually arrive together. Anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, grief and mood instability all shape recovery, and leaving them untreated is one of the most common reasons people relapse after otherwise solid treatment.
Renova Recovery treats co-occurring conditions inside the same PHP care plan rather than referring them out. Clients work on coping skills and daily stability while also addressing what sits underneath the substance use, because separating the two rarely holds up in practice. Where psychiatric medication is part of the picture, our team coordinates with the prescribing provider so the clinical and medical sides of care stay connected.
Renova Recovery is a substance use treatment program. We treat mental health conditions as they occur alongside addiction. We are not a standalone psychiatric partial hospitalization program.

OCEAN COUNTY DATA
PHP in Ocean County: What the State Data Shows
The New Jersey Department of Human Services publishes substance use treatment admissions data for every county in the state. The 2024 figures for Ocean County are worth reading before you choose a level of care.
Ocean County residents accounted for 6,708 substance use treatment admissions in 2024. Only 123 of them, under 2 percent, were to a partial hospitalization program. Statewide, partial hospitalization accounted for about 4 percent of admissions. Put another way: Ocean County makes up roughly 8 percent of New Jersey's treatment admissions but only about 4 percent of its partial hospitalization admissions.
That is not evidence that people here need less intensive treatment. It is evidence that the level of care sitting between residential rehab and weekly counseling has been thin on the ground in Ocean County.

Alcohol Is Ocean County's Number One Reason for Treatment
In 2024, alcohol was the primary substance for 3,200 of Ocean County's 6,708 treatment admissions, or 48 percent. Heroin accounted for 1,997 admissions, 30 percent. Statewide, alcohol was the primary substance in 42 percent of admissions, so Ocean County runs six points above the state average.
The gap is widening. In 2023, alcohol was 45 percent of Ocean County admissions and heroin was 34 percent. In a single year, alcohol admissions rose about 11 percent while heroin admissions fell about 8 percent. Alcoholism is the quieter half of the addiction conversation in this county, and it is the half that is growing.

How Many Hours a Week Is a Real PHP?
The American Society of Addiction Medicine sets the standard the whole industry places against. ASAM defines partial hospitalization as Level 2.5, and the threshold is twenty or more hours of clinically intensive programming a week.
Renova Recovery's PHP runs six hours a day, five days a week, in two group blocks. That is thirty hours a week, half again the ASAM threshold, with individual counseling built into the plan rather than offered as an add-on.
This is worth checking when you compare programs. Some programs marketed as PHP run closer to the intensive outpatient range.

Does Insurance Cover PHP in New Jersey?
Most commercial health plans include behavioral health benefits that cover partial hospitalization, though coverage, authorization requirements and out-of-pocket costs vary by policy. Renova Recovery works with most commercial PPO plans, primarily on an out-of-network basis.

After PHP: Stepping Down to IOP and Outpatient
PHP is not where treatment ends, it is where it starts. Most clients step down from PHP into our Intensive Outpatient Program at three hours a day, then into standard outpatient at 90 minutes a week, then into the Alumni Program. Each step reduces the hours while keeping the clinical relationship intact, which is the point. Structure that disappears all at once is the most common way people lose ground after a strong stretch of treatment.
Discharge planning starts early in your stay, not the week you finish.

Finishing PHP is a real accomplishment, and it is also where a lot of people lose their footing, because the structure disappears all at once. Clients who complete treatment stay connected through our Alumni Program at no cost, including follow-up calls, check-ins after discharge, and connection to community recovery resources and peer support.

What does PHP stand for in addiction treatment?
PHP stands for Partial Hospitalization Program. Despite the name, nobody is hospitalized. It is an outpatient level of care that runs about six hours a day, five days a week, and clients go home every evening.
What is a partial hospitalization program?
A partial hospitalization program is the most intensive level of outpatient addiction treatment. It provides daily clinical programming, individual and group therapy, and medication coordination, without requiring a client to live at a facility.
Is PHP the same as Partial Care in New Jersey?
Yes. New Jersey licenses this level of care as Partial Care. Insurance carriers, discharge planners and clinicians nationally call it a Partial Hospitalization Program, or PHP. Renova Recovery is licensed in New Jersey to provide Partial Care.
How many hours a day is PHP at Renova Recovery?
Approximately five to six hours a day, five days a week, Monday through Friday.
How long does PHP last?
Length of stay depends on clinical progress, treatment goals and insurance authorization rather than a fixed number of weeks. Your plan is reviewed regularly throughout treatment.you can read more on this here
What is the difference between PHP and IOP?
PHP runs about five to six hours a day, five days a week. IOP runs about three hours a day, three to five days a week, with morning, afternoon and evening options. PHP is the higher level of care and is often where clients start before stepping down to IOP.
Does insurance cover PHP in New Jersey?
Most commercial plans include behavioral health benefits that cover partial hospitalization, though coverage varies by policy and network status. Renova Recovery works with most commercial PPO plans, primarily out of network. We verify benefits on the phone before admission. Call (908) 533-9808.
What if I do not have insurance?
Ask about private payment options when you call and we will go through them with you.
Can I work while attending PHP?
PHP is a full treatment day, so most clients adjust their work schedule during treatment. If that is not workable, our Intensive Outpatient Program runs three to five days a week with morning, afternoon and evening options.
Where do I live during PHP?
At home, or in a sober living residence. PHP is outpatient, so Renova Recovery does not provide housing. If your current living situation is not safe or supportive, tell us during your assessment and we can coordinate sober living referrals in Ocean County.
Do you offer PHP for alcohol addiction?
Yes. Alcoholism is the most common reason adults enter our program. PHP alcohol treatment combines daily therapy with Vivitrol when clinically appropriate, administered on site at our Brick facility.
Do you offer PHP after detox?
Yes. Clients coming out of a detox or residential program can move directly into PHP, usually within a day or two of discharge. Renova Recovery does not provide medical detox, but we coordinate placement with an affiliated detox provider when withdrawal management is needed first.
Is Medication-Assisted Treatment available in PHP?
Yes, when clinically appropriate. MAT is coordinated with a prescribing medical provider and runs alongside therapy. Vivitrol injections are administered on site. Options and eligibility are determined by the prescriber.
Do you treat mental health conditions alongside addiction?
Yes. Anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, grief and mood instability are treated within the same PHP care plan as the substance use. Renova Recovery is a substance use treatment program and is not a standalone psychiatric partial hospitalization program.

Do you offer PHP for teenagers?
No. Renova Recovery serves adults 18 and older. We do not provide adolescent or child partial care.
