Stopping benzodiazepines abruptly after regular use can be medically dangerous and, in some cases, life-threatening, including a risk of seizures. The FDA has required a boxed warning, its strongest safety warning, on the entire benzodiazepine drug class specifically covering the risks of abuse, dependence, and withdrawal reactions. This is different from many other substances, and it's important to take seriously.

Combining benzodiazepines with alcohol, opioids, or other sedating substances can increase the risk of extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, overdose, coma, and death.

Do I Need Benzodiazepine Detox First?

Benzodiazepines are different from most other substances.

Stopping them abruptly, or tapering too quickly, can cause seizures and other medically serious withdrawal symptoms. For that reason, benzodiazepine dependence is usually addressed through a supervised taper managed by a prescribing physician or a medical detox program, rather than by stopping on your own before treatment begins.


Renova Recovery is an outpatient provider. We do not offer on-site medical detox, inpatient care, or residential treatment.

A higher level of care may be needed first if,


  • someone has been taking high doses
  • using benzodiazepines daily over a long period,
  • has had a withdrawal seizure before,
  • combining benzodiazepines with alcohol or opioids,
  • already in withdrawal,
  • in psychiatric crisis,
  • cannot stay safe without medical supervision.

Partial Care (PHP)

Renova's most structured outpatient program, and often the right starting point immediately after a medical detox or a rapid taper.
